Chinese Shar-Pei Herbs And Their Uses

The information provided below on herbal remedies, has
been used by Shar-Pei Canadiana for the last 25 years
on a need to use basis,  and are by no means, meant
for you not to seek veterinarian attention or other
professional advice, should it be warranted. They are
simply additional supplements that worked well for us,
when needed, and depending on what we are trying
accomplish with their use.

Herbs and Their Purpose at Our Kennel

I trust everyone is feeding a well researched diet.
40 years ago we had no commercial dog food
preparations, and dogs ate our table scraps then, did
very well on them, and lived long healthy lives. That is
food for thought.

You must always check your labels for soy, soya by
products, lethicin and brewers yeast, as these
ingredients can be the sole cause for hair loss,  skin
and ear problems in your dogs, also people as well.

Asparagus: Boiled and mushed up into diet for people
and pets, great for cancer, cancer prevention, blood
vessels, kidneys and an overall preventative for many
things. I believe in this vegetable, love this vegetable,
and we eat this at least twice a week.

Pumpkin: Seeds green roasted pumpkin seeds, shelled
from the bulk food store, make great snacks and expel
worms, which you may know even know your dog or cat
has. They can eat them as treats, or you can grind
them up and put them over their food once a month,
check their stools and see if there are any dead
worms after this. A must at least once a month,
especially if your animals have had worms or fleas.
REAL pumpkin pie filling in a can will relieve constipation
and stop diaherra in its tracks for people and dogs. I
have personally tried and tested this. WORKS!

Yogurt: For everyday snacks or for sick old and young,
especially where vomiting and diaherra are present.
Returns intestinal flora back to it's natural balance, as
well as a yeast fighter. Everything here eats
yogurt(plain and fruit) and is especially good after a
treatment of antibiotics.
Broccoli Flower Heads: Should be used in conjunction
with Vitamin C, CQ10, and garlic (large doses for all
types of Cancer).

Red Raspberry Leaves: This herb I refuse to be
without, as it is used with all my pregnant bitches the
last four weeks of their pregnancy - it is responsible
for strengthening the uterus in preparation for
delivering healthy pups and their placenta's. I have
never had a C-Section or uterine inertia, ever, in any
of my bitches and I have had litters of up to 8
puppies, and large small litters. It comes in any herb
store, in gel capsules and I give 1 a day.

Coconut Oil: The health benefits of virgin coconut oil
include hair care, skin care, stress relief, maintaining
cholesterol levels, weight loss, increased immunity,
proper digestion and metabolism, relief from kidney
problems, heart diseases, high blood pressure,
diabetes, HIV and cancer, dental care, and bone
strength. These benefits of coconut oil can be
attributed to the presence of lauric acid, capric acid
and caprylic acid, and its properties such as
antimicrobial, antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial,
soothing, etc.

The human body converts lauric acid into monolaurin
which is claimed to help in dealing with viruses and
bacteria causing diseases such as herpes, influenza,
cytomegalovirus, and even HIV. It helps in fighting
harmful bacteria such as listeria monocytogenes and
heliobacter pylori, and harmful protozoa such as giardia
lamblia. As a result of these various health benefits of
coconut oil, though its exact mechanism of action was
unknown, it has been extensively used in Ayurveda, the
traditional Indian medicinal system.
Coconut oil is often preferred by athletes and body
builders and by those who are dieting. The reason
behind this being that coconut oil contains lesser
calories than other oils, its fat content is easily
converted into energy and it does not lead to
accumulation of fat in the heart and arteries. Coconut
oil helps in boosting energy and endurance, and
enhances the performance of athletes.
Health benefits of coconut oil include the following:
* Hair Care: Coconut oil is one of the best natural
nutrition for hair. It helps in healthy growth of hair
providing them a shinny complexion. Regular massage of
the head with coconut oil ensures that your scalp is
free of dandruff, lice, and lice eggs, even if your scalp
is dry. Coconut oil is extensively used in the Indian
sub-continent for hair care. It is an excellent
conditioner and helps in the re-growth of damaged air.
It also provides the essential proteins required for
nourishing damaged hair. It is therefore used as hair
care oil and used in manufacturing various conditioners,
and dandruff relief creams. Coconut oil is normally
applied topically for hair care.

* Stress Relief: Coconut oil is very soothing and hence
it helps in removing stress. Applying coconut oil to the
head followed with a gentle massage helps in removing
mental fatigue.
* Coconut Skin Care: Coconut oil is excellent massage
oil for the skin as well. It acts as an effective
moisturizer on all types of skins including dry skin. The
benefit of coconut oil on the skin is comparable to that
of mineral oil. Further, unlike mineral oil, there is no
chance of having any adverse side effects on the skin
with the application of coconut oil. Coconut oil
therefore is a safe solution for preventing dryness and
flaking of skin. It also delays wrinkles, and sagging of
skin which normally become prominent with age. Coconut
oil also helps in treating various skin problems including
psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema and other skin infections.
Therefore coconut oil forms the basic ingredient of
various body care products such as soaps, lotions,
creams, etc., used for skin care.
* Premature Aging: Coconut oil helps in preventing
premature aging and degenerative diseases due to its
antioxidant properties.
* Heart Diseases: There is a misconception spread
among many people that coconut oil is not good for the
heart. This is because it contains a large quantity of
saturated fats. However, coconut oil is beneficial for
the heart. It contains about 50% lauric acid, which
helps in preventing various heart problems including high
cholesterol levels and high blood pressure. The
saturated fats present in coconut oil are not harmful
as it happens in case of other vegetables oils. It does
not lead to increase in LDL levels. It also reduces the
incidence of injury in arteries and therefore helps in
preventing atherosclerosis.
* Weight Loss: Coconut oil is very useful in reducing
weight. It contains short and medium-chain fatty acids
that help in taking off excessive weight. It is also
easy to digest and it helps in healthy functioning of the
thyroid and enzymes systems. Further, it increases
the body metabolism by removing stress on pancreases,
thereby burning out more energy and helping obese and
overweight people reduce their weight. Hence, people
living in tropical coastal areas, who eat coconut oil daily
as their primary cooking oil, are normally not fat,
obese or overweight.
* Pancreatitis: Coconut oil is also believed to be useful
in treating pancreatitis.
* Digestion: Internal use of coconut oil occurs primarily
as cooking oil. Coconut oil helps in improving the
digestive system and thus prevents various stomach and
digestion related problems including irritable bowel
syndrome. The saturated fats present in coconut oil
have anti microbial properties and help in dealing with
various bacteria, fungi, parasites, etc., that cause
indigestion. Coconut oil also helps in absorption of other
nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and amino acids.
* Immunity: Coconut oil is also good for the immune
system. It strengthens the immune system as it
contains antimicrobial lipids, lauric acid, capric acid and
caprylic acid which have antifungal, antibacterial and
antiviral properties. The human body converts lauric
acid into monolaurin which is claimed to help in dealing
with viruses and bacteria causing diseases such as
herpes, influenza, cytomegalovirus, and even HIV. It
helps in fighting harmful bacteria such as listeria
monocytogenes and heliobacter pylori, and harmful
protozoa such as giardia lamblia.
* Healing: When applied on infections, it forms a
chemical layer which protects the infected body part
from external dust, air, fungi, bacteria and virus.
Coconut oil is most effective on bruises as it speeds up
the healing process by repairing damaged tissues.
* Infections: Coconut oil is very effective against a
variety of infections due to its antifungal, antiviral,
and antibacterial properties. According to the Coconut
Research Center, coconut oil kills viruses that cause
influenza, measles, hepatitis, herpes, SARS, etc. It
also kills bacteria that cause ulcers, throat infections,
urinary tract infections, pneumonia, and gonorrhea,
etc. Coconut oil is also effective on fungi and yeast
that cause candidiasis, ringworm, athlete's foot,
thrush, diaper rash, etc.
* Liver: The presence of medium chain triglycerides
and fatty acids helps in preventing liver diseases as
they substances are easily converted into energy when
they reach the liver, thus reducing work load on the
liver and also preventing accumulation of fat.
* Kidney: Coconut oil helps in preventing kidney and gall
bladder diseases. It also helps in dissolving kidney
stones. * Diabetes: Coconut oil helps in controlling blood
sugar, and improves the secretion of insulin. It also
helps in effective utilization of blood glucose, thereby
preventing and treating diabetes.
* Bones: As mentioned earlier, coconut oil improves the
ability of our body to absorb important minerals. These
include calcium and magnesium which are necessary for
development of bones. Thus coconut oil is very useful to
women who are prone to osteoporosis after middle age.
* Dental Care: Calcium is an important element present
in teeth. Since coconut oil facilitates absorption of
calcium by the body, it helps in getting strong teeth.
Coconut oil also stops tooth decay.
* HIV and Cancer: It is believed that coconut oil plays
an instrumental role in reducing viral susceptibility of
HIV and cancer patients.
Kelp:(seaweed) This is a natural thyroid stimulator,
and the iodine present in kelp is necessary for properly
functioning thyroid, good metabolism, and a strong
glandular system. It is also known as an anti-cancer,
antibiotic, anti-arthritic and antioxidant - I use 650
mgs daily throughout my bitches pregnancy and even
use it as a regular regime if I have a stressed out
dog. There is also a soap available at your local bulk
food stores.
Apple Cider(Golden) Vinegar Organic: This is another
must for a kennel - I have used this faithfully, since
1986, and I use 1/2 cap full in my dogs water
everyday, I held this responsible for many of my
veterans old age. It is responsible for so much -
balancing digestive system and urinary tract, immune
system, breaks calcium deposits (great for warding off
arthritis), detoxifies body, a remedy for infertile
bitches. Also fights fleas, worms and other parasites
.
Echinacea: One particular herb that we are very fond
of for strengthening our immune systems is Echinacea.
Keeping in mind that many of the shar-pei health
immune related illnesses are a result of an over active
immune system, such as familial shar-pei fever, and
swollen hock syndrome etc., and the herb Echinacea is
an immune system booster, by giving this to your dog
you are boosting an already overactive problem, thus
making the condition worse, rather than helping it. So
if are considering using Echinacea on your pet please
make sure the condition you are considering using if
for, is a result of a weak immune system by checking
with a breeder or a vet. Remember for people and pets
and in Europe they only take it on the months of the
year ending in R.

Tea Tree Oil Soap: It originated in Australia from the
Melaleuca Tree and is an essential oil, known as a
natural antiseptic, extremely effective as an
antibiotic, antifungal, antibacterial and viral infection
fighter, that is gentle to the skin and speeds healing
of blemishes, athletes foot, boils, calluses & corns,
cold sores, herpes, insect bites and stings, lice, yeast
infections - so you can see how it would fit in great
for the shar pei, it can be used for just about
everything from skin ailments including mucinosis(clear
blisters appearing on some shar pei's skin). Again, as
with everything, I personally have had no negative
reactions to tea tree oil by products.

St. John's Wart Oil & Herb: Another excellent one -
I make my own oil and use it for everything, I even
have people wanting this one. The herb is taken
internally, is a spirit lifter and great for anxiety,
shar-pei that suffer from separation anxiety, and for
shar-pei that attend shows on a regular basis. The oil
(external use only) is blood red and is used for any and
all rashes, eczema, chafting, skin dryness, burns,
inflammation, skin cancer, and especially good for the
ears and cleaning, soothing and does help fight yeast.
As with all things, works well on some and not on
others.

Fresh Garlic Clove: Just for those interested in what
garlic does do for your pet -Garlic is considered
another miracle herb and a favourite of many natural
practioners. It is a total healing food. It is a herbal
antibiotic that is anti-viral, anti-fungal and
anti-bacterial in the same ways as penicillin. It lowers
high blood pressure and blood sugar, reduces
cholesterol, heals infections and infectious diseases of
ALL types. It also clears YEAST over runs (great for
our breed). It is effective in healing urinary tract
infections, strengthens digestion, feline urologic
syndrome, lung and respiratory diseases, aids the body
to to throw off or resist most diseases. It is a flea
and worm repellent, and a complete intestinal cleaner.
Also great for overweight dogs, hip displasia and all
joint arthritis. If your pet suffers from one of the
above you may want to give garlic a try. There are
many different opinions on dose and length of time
used, so always ask your herbalist about recommeded
doses. Small doses are recommended and intermittently.

Rescue Remedy: A bach flower remedy - a must for
delivering puppies - especially if one had a traumatic
delivery - goes for adult shar-pei too - a stabilizer
for all STRESSFUL situations. SEE BELOW ALL BACH
FLOWER INFO.

Vitamin C: For everything - dogs, puppies can have this
to bowel tolerance(if you see diarrhea then they are
getting too much) - especially for cancer diagnosed
shar-pei - at least 1000 mg daily - I give my bitches
500mg daily throughout pregnancy - never have sick
puppies or moms. If the dog is ill, then all Vitamin C
will be absorbed quickly into the body, and any extra
will be urinated out.
Parsley: Great shredded in food once in a while, if your
pei has bad breath - this helps - excellent for
kidneys, especially older shar-pei loosing their kidney
functions.

Comfrey: I grow this in my garden, excellent for
wounds, breaks, sprains (external use only)-crush the
plant and add into hot water-produces a very slimy
substance that you put or pack on and leave overnight.
Heals incredibly!

CoEnzyme Q10: GREAT FOR CANCER AND HEART
CONDITIONS - CQ10 is referred to the miracle
nutrient coenzyme in todays modern medicine. Many
medical professionals are still really unaware of it and
its properties. However MANY of the newsletters I
subscribe to are starting to commend its values in
todays medicine. SOME of the claims to say the least
- extending life in general - *strengthening the heart
without exercise* - *reversing high blood pressure* -
*reversing gum disease* - *AIDS therapy* -
*protecting the heart* - *SUCCESSFUL TREATMENT
OF CANCER* - *infection fighter*....and many more.
CQ10 has been found to have no side effects. The
body cannot survive without CQ10 and when the
*natural* body level of CQ10 start to drop so does the
health of the body, basically paving the way for
disease to start up. Basically CQ10 is a *natural*
nutrient manufactured by our body and is essential to
the life and health of every living cell. Without it or
lack of it our bodies are not able to fight back against
infection or intrusion of diseases such as cancer...and
many of us lack it...anyways for those interested in
this nutrient - there is a new book called "The Miracle
Nutrient CoenzymeQ10" by E. Bliznakov and G. Hunt
-great book. For cancer 150 mg daily should be used.

Slippery Elm: Exceptional HERB for
Diaherra/Vomiting/Pnemonia and STRESS and cancer.
It is exceptional for the young and old, or very
weak(this is incredible) I use this alot. It coats and
heals all inflamed tissue internally and externally, and
is used for the stomach, ulcers, bowels, kidneys,
constipation, especially diarrhea, dysentry and colitis
and the entire digestive tract. Also excellent for lungs,
coughing, vomiting and for stomach and bowel cancer. I
use it with honey, pets love it and it is incredible,
especially of you have a sick puppy.

Honey I use it a lot during pregnancy and again for
anything under the weather. It is immediately
absorbed into the body for a natural energy.

Murphy's Oil Soap We use this to bath our shar-pei in
(please make sure it is the 100% Natural Vegetable
Oil Soap and not the spray container cleaner) - works
great for their coats and keeps their coats healthy
and clean, and have been using it since 1988 with
great success.

Bach Flower Remedies
I personally used Rescue remedy and recommended it
to many - I also used it on stressed newborns.

Dr. Edward Bach developed these therapies in England
around the 1930's working with a homeopath when he
discovered the flower essences. Even though it was
developed for humans, it has been found to work just
as well on animals. Flower essence therapy works on a
similar mechanism as homeopathy.

Parts of the flower are diluted and then potentised to
become effective. The flower essences are found in
liquid form. Thus, the remedies work on an energetic
level, similar to homeopathy, acupuncture and Reiki.
They affect the mental and emotional parts of our
being. Dr. Bach felt that physical illness can be caused
by emotional upset and by fixing the emotional balance
the physical illness disappeared. Flower essences work
to heal both physical, mental and emotional illness. All
of the aforementioned illnesses affect each other in
one way or another. Therefore, flower essences
restore the inner balance by working on the vital
force. The vital force is an inner force within the body
that governs our strength and well-being. As we get
sick our vital force weakens and therefore, the flower
essences work on our vital force to strengthen it. The
particles of the essences work in specific patterns.
This means that certain essences cure certain
illnesses. It is the practitioner's knowledge that is
needed to pick out the correct remedy for the
appropriate ailment. Overall, flower essence are to
said to release negative emotions and help heal and
calm, using either internally or externally non toxic and
have no side effects and are safe for pets, people,
children and animals of all sizes. But, how does one
know what emotions dogs, cats, horses and all animals
are experiencing? You would be surprised as to how
easy it is to "read" an animal. All it takes is some
observation and a little insight. You might discover that
animals take less effort than humans do!

RESCUE REMEDY - The following is a description of
the Flower Remedies that make up Rescue Remedy, the
most commonly used Bach Flower Remedy. Rescue
Remedy is not a Flower Essence in itself but a
combination of five of original Remedies. Once these
five remedies are combined, the Rescue becomes an
essence unto itself. If is different now than its
individual essences. Rescue Remedy is the 5-flower
combination for any acute trauma or stress. Considered
as a single remedy in combinations. The five remedies
are Star of Bethlehem for trauma and numbness,
Clematis for being grounded and to prevent passing out,
Rock Rose for panic, Impatiens for tension and
irritability and Cherry Plum to prevent losing control.
Basically four drops of the stock bottle are added to a
one ounce glass dropper bottle of spring water and
shaken up. It is best to make this up immediately
before use as the mixture will not keep too long. Three
or four drops of the mixture can be given into the
mouth or onto the gums every five minutes until a
response is seen. Rescue Remedy can also be given in
the water during any time of stress and in this case it
is best to use ten drops every time the water is
changed. Rescue Remedy, combined with the
homeopathic remedy Aconite makes a wonderful calming
essence that can be used on wild animals, and for
rehabilitation, as mentioned above it works well on any
kind of stress or fear situation and definitely helps
with survival rate in these situations. A few drops of
the combined essence on the gums or even onto the ear
of the rescued animal will calm them down and make
them easier to handle. It can even be sprayed onto
the skin or ears with a spray bottle and will still have
a beneficial effect. A dropper of the combination can
be put in the daily water for rescued animals to help
them withstand the stress of captivity, and make them
more manageable.
Clematis- Increases attention span and ability to focus
on the training lesson at hand. When the animal is
comatose or unconscious for any reason; returning the
animal to consciousness. After any surgery to increase
recovery alertness time.
Impatiens- For the very nervous animal. Any form of
nervous difficulties, especially those that have the
nervous shakes. For the overly anxious animal at
feeding times, before a show or vets or for animals
that have epileptic type fits especially when agitated
by being overly excited or upset. Impatiens is for any
form of pain.
Rock Rose - For any form of terror and panic or after
an accident, injury, fire or anything terrifying. Also
for the overly fearful animal that possibly was
terrified sometime in their life. Fear does not dissolve
naturally. Rock Rose is for dauntless courage. For
animals that are used in service to mankind such as
police work. For the courageous animal to accentuate
their already innate abilities.
Cherry Plum - For the animal that looses control,
becoming wild and crazed or for vicious animals that
become dangerous when provoked. For the high strung
animal, including horses, that lose control easily, animal
that are destructive, losing control or losing control
when seeing another animal enter into their territory.
Helps retain control during mating season for both
sexes. To remain in control when in competition or
stressed by strange people, noises, animals. Training
animals not to react to gun -fire. For the animal that
becomes frantic when traveling such as horses that
spook when being placed in trailers. For the animal
that suffers from seizures or anxiety attacks, an
animal who chews himself, allergies to grasses, or
staying away from stitches after surgery.

Star of Bethlehem - Star of Bethlehem is for all
forms of trauma. To give comfort to animals who were
left alone or are in a kennel feeling unloved. For an
injured or ill animal who is required to remain at a
veterinary clinic, during which one time their owners
are there with them.
Cerato- keeps animals grounded or on track.
Therefore, it is ideal to administer before and during a
training session and during competitive events.
ADMINISTERING BACH FLOWERS?- To make up a
combination, use 2 drops of each desired flower
essence to one ounce of water; for Rescue Remedy use
4 drops per ounce of water. You can add up to 20%
alcohol (usually brandy or vodka) as a preservative as
desired, but some animals dislike the taste. (You can
use flower remedies straight from the stock bottle,
but they taste terrible!) You may use up to 6 essences
in combination, with Rescue Remedy counting as one
essence. In general, use the fewest essences possible.
The remedy can be given by mouth, which is the most
effective method. Only a few drops (4-8) are
necessary, and need not be swallowed, but only must
contact the mucous membranes (gums, tongue, lips). Be
careful not to contaminate the dropper by touching it
to the animal (if this occurs, rinse the dropper in very
hot water before returning it to the bottle). You can
also add a dropper full to the water dish, or a few
drops on wet food (there is no effect of dilution). You
can add a dropper full to a spray bottle filled with
spring water, and use it to spray a room, carrier, car,
around litter boxes or plants, or other problem areas.
You can even put a few drops in your hand and pat the
animal on the head and around the ears with it--the
head is very sensitive to energy and will absorb the
flower essences in this way. In the case of chewing or
excessive licking or hot spots, you might want to try
applying the remedy directly to the problem spot (IF it
isn't too raw, otherwise the remedy will sting); the
animal will then consume it when it next licks that area.

The Bach Remedies can be taken directly from the
stock bottle or from the personal dilution bottle by
placing 2 - 4 drops in your animal's feed or water. The
Remedies are easy and convenient to use with varied
methods of application that can be selected to suit an
individual's specific needs. The most common forms of
administering the Remedies are placing them into the
animal's food or water; dropping them directly into the
animal's mouth; or rubbing the needed remedies on
one's hands before petting them. There is no improper
or wrong method of applying the Bach Remedies. It is
truly not necessary to be precise in counting the
number of drops in any of the dilution methods. The
suggestions given, herein, are merely to offer a
reasonable parameter of accepted dilution methods.
Follow your own judgment and insights. Remember that
you cannot overdose the Remedies for they are
non-toxic.
DOSAGE AND TIMING - Just a few drops (4 - 8 ) at
a time are sufficient. For serious or acute conditions
the remedy can be given as often as needed, even
every few minutes. For most behavioral problems , you
can give 3 to 4 times a day for 2 to 4 weeks. If the
response is reached by that time, you may begin to
decrease the dosage gradually. You may need to add a
dropper full to drinking water or give once a day
long-term for some problems.

MULTIPLE ANIMALS - The Flower Essence remedies
are non-toxic and have no side effects. Therefore,
they are safe if another pet in your household should
receive the flower essence via drinking water. With
flower essences, if the animal needs the remedy, the
remedy will work and vice versa.

CHOOSING REMEDIES FOR ANIMALS - Assess the
characteristics of the animal exactly as for a person.
Drops of remedy can be given on food or in the animal's
drinking water, 2 drops for birds and small animals; 10
drops in a bucket of water for large animals such as
horses.
